From the scan to the finished room

Carpenter Breu banishes the classic folding meter/inch rule and instead relies on 3D building measurements and the derivation of geometries from point clouds.

In the family business Holzbau Breu in Oberegg in the Swiss canton of Appenzell, the third generation is already at the workbench. Master carpenter Pascal Breu runs the company and is open to new developments in timber construction technology, but always remains committed to traditional craftsmanship.

In addition to traditional carpentry work - "from the tree trunk to the finished room" - he offers project implementation in timber construction, for extensions, conversions and additions, and his services range from project development to construction management and production.

For years, the innovative company has been using 3D laser scanning for as-built surveys, which is much more accurate and efficient. This gives it a unique selling point in its sector in the region. To evaluate the point cloud, the company relies on rmDATA 3DWorx.

Bringing the construction site into the office

For Pascal Breu, the biggest advantages are clearly the reduced time required and the associated cost savings: "The 3D building survey reduces the time spent on the construction site and shifts processing to the office. There are no more on-site appointments for re-measuring." With the virtual twin, the craftsman literally brings the construction site into the office and always has all the measurements available. There, he discusses the project with the customer using the scans. The customer immediately gets a first impression and can better visualize the plans. The master carpenter adds with a grin: "Visualizing the point cloud shortens the planning and decision-making process, because most customers find it difficult to read a plan."

In this context, the innovative timber constructor is already thinking about the next step. Sharing the point cloud and visualization via 3DWorx WebShare would make him even more flexible. Customers would not have to come to the office every time and could view the designs in advance.

"rmDATA 3DWorx is a clear improvement for us in the project process: from the evaluation of the point cloud to the visualization of the plans in front of the client. With 3DWorx, we can quickly produce something tangible."

Efficient project workflow

Pascal Breu and his employees drive to the construction site and record the inventory with the scanner. This means they can now accept orders that are not in the immediate vicinity, as a single measurement is sufficient. The necessary planning bases and geometries are derived in no time at all using the simple workflows in 3DWorx: Sections, floor plans, views. "With 3DWorx, we can quickly produce something tangible," Breu is convinced.
The same basis is also used to execute the plans by exporting the data to any CAD program and then transferring it to the production machine.

Finally, the master carpenter emphasizes another advantage - the material savings: the exact measurements largely eliminate offcuts and allow work to be carried out with a precise fit.

About Holzbau Breu

Holzbau Breu is a carpentry business from Oberegg in the Swiss canton of Appenzell. The third generation of the Breu family has been at the workbench since 2010. After completing his carpentry apprenticeship, Pascal Breu trained as a TS Timber Construction Technician and passed the examination to become a master carpenter. Pascal Breu is open to new developments in timber construction technology, but always remains committed to traditional craftsmanship and continues the work of his ancestors into the future. Modern technologies such as laser scanning are replacing folding meters and folding rulers, and he and his team use the right software to evaluate the point clouds obtained for 3D building measurements. Projects for conversions and new buildings, residential buildings and agricultural buildings are just as much a part of his repertoire as consulting and planning tasks as well as construction management and construction supervision planning.
